“The most fascinating part for me was the class in which we learned that Jews look like us. I feel embarrassed to admit that I, as well as probably many others, thought otherwise, assuming that they all wear hats, side locks and long black coats and have aquiline noses. This is not true.”
school student from Pionki
“We’d like to encourage everyone to try to discover traces of the Jewish past in their towns, like we did here. Seek, discover, ask, do not give up, not even if people criticize you for your work.”
Agnieszka and Marlena, Złotów
“When I pass by the Teacher’s House, I know it’s where the synagogue used to stand. Walking down Kołłątaja Street, I am reminded of all the shops that used to exist there. Puławy is a different city to me now.”
school student from Puławy
Students in Zaręby Kościelne discovered class registers from the 1930s in their school’s archives, with their grandparents’ names next to the Jewish names of their fellow students. Ryszard, the oldest resident of Radoszyce, was happy to find someone willing to listen to his recollections. Based on his stories, students created a tour around their town, identified the addresses and drew genealogical trees for two local Jewish families. School drawings by the 10-year-old Mechel Zweig were discovered in the attic of one of the houses in Pilzno. Students from the local technical school prepared a tour thatn described the town that Mechel had lived in.
